Cumin seeds, also known as Jeera, are a popular spice used in cooking and medicine worldwide. Besides adding a unique bittersweet, earthy flavor to recipes, cumin has medicinal properties that can add depth to your diet. In Ayurvedic cooking, whole and ground cumin seeds are traditionally used to stimulate appetite and improve food digestion. Its pungent, hot, dry, and bitter qualities enhance digestive fire, support ojas, and balance vata and kapha doshas.

Cumin is a spice that can help improve digestion and promote gut health. It contains many beneficial plant compounds that can help manage type-2 diabetes, ease stomach problems, relieve pain and anxiety, improve cholesterol levels, promote weight loss, and prevent chronic diseases. When consumed with ginger and black salt, cumin can help reduce flatulence and bloating. It is also known to be helpful for menstrual pain. To prepare a warm tea, roast 1/4 gm of cumin powder in a pan and mix it with two teaspoons of jaggery or raw sugar. Once mixed well, steep it in hot water for a few minutes and drink it before and during your menstrual cycle.

SUGGESTED USE

Take 1/4 teaspoon twice daily with room temperature water or as otherwise directed by your healthcare practitioner. Cumin may also be used as a spice in cooking.
